A sunny winter on the Costa Blanca

A sunny winter on the Costa Blanca

November traditionally heralds the arrival of winter, and therefore of the cold. And it has to be said: temperatures close to 0°C, the rain and the wind hardly make you want to set foot outside. Instead, you would rather curl up on the sofa with a film and a soft, cosy blanket! Have you had enough of the cold days? Are you short on vitamin D? So why not fly off to the Costa Blanca?

With an average temperature of 18 ºC and more than 300 days of sunshine a year, the White Coast is the ideal place to recharge your batteries in winter. Quieter than in summer, the Costa Blanca nonetheless holds its own and offers plenty of activities…even in winter! In this article, Secundo draws up a list of activities to enjoy with family or friends at this time of year.

Make the most of the natural spaces

In winter, you will enjoy the coast in a different way, much calmer and more relaxed, far from mass tourism, which will let you make the most of the many natural spaces and take in the beauty of the landscapes. Strolls along the beach, exploring the region by bike, scuba diving, water sports… You will be spoilt for choice!

During your getaway, we strongly recommend heading to Rojales, a typical little town on the Costa Blanca where you will discover charming cave houses, famous across the whole region. You will come across them in the hills, to the south of the town. Do not miss the Casa de las Conchas, a cave house decorated with shells, tiles and mirrors. What is more, Rojales owes its fame to the Cuevas del Rodeo, caves carved into the hillside in the 19th century.

Torrevieja and the La Mata lagoons

The salt flats of Torrevieja are probably THE best-known nature park on the Costa Blanca Sud. What makes them special? Their waters, with a high salt content, are pink in colour. The pink hue comes from the algae that carpet the bottom, hence the nickname "the pink lagoons of Torrevieja". This natural site is also a haven for wildlife and is home to many pink flamingos all year round.

Moreover, it is on the Costa Blanca that you will find the largest palm garden in Europe, the Elche palm grove, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are passionate about medieval history, we recommend visiting the city of Alicante and climbing the steps up to Santa Bárbara Castle, which towers over the city and offers a breathtaking view.

Step through the doors of the museums

In summer, the heat invites you to take a dip in the Mediterranean or to lounge on a terrace with a good cocktail (to be enjoyed in moderation, of course). In winter, we recommend making the most of the milder temperatures to step through the doors of the region's museums that you may already have spotted on a previous getaway. Rich in history, the Costa Blanca is brimming with museums of every kind that will let you broaden your horizons while having fun. Head, for example, to the Chocolate Museum in Villajoyosa for those with a sweet tooth, or to the Comic Museum in Calpe.

Treat yourself at a Michelin-starred restaurant

Spain is brimming with Michelin-starred restaurants; we have in fact devoted an article to the subject that you can discover. Secundo has selected 3 great ones that you should not miss under any circumstances!

Restaurant La Finca, Elche

At the helm of this restaurant for 35 years is the Spanish chef Susi Diaz, famous in Spain as a member of the jury on the cooking show "Top Chef" for the past 4 years. Self-taught, her cuisine is characterised by the use of citrus fruits, aromatic herbs and flowers that she grows in her own garden and that she pairs with fish and seafood from the region. Her creative cuisine, skilfully blending tradition and modernity, earned her a Michelin-guide star in 2006.

Restaurant BonAmb, Javea

Housed in a restored country house, this 2-star restaurant, headed by the young chef Alberto Serruz, reinterprets Mediterranean gastronomy with a highly creative signature cuisine. Open since 27 July 2011, this restaurant aims to give its guests an unforgettable culinary experience. This ambition is reflected in the very name of the restaurant, where the term "Amb" refers to the atmosphere of the establishment, set in an enchanting location. The restaurant offers regional dishes through plates that are understated yet creative. The goal is to showcase local produce to the fullest. Today, the BonAmb restaurant holds 2 stars, awarded by the Michelin guide in 2013 and 2016. A must-visit address in the region!

Restaurant Quique Dacosta, Denia (Alicante)

Three Michelin-guide stars, best restaurant in Europe, one of the best restaurants in the world, so many accolades for the famous Spanish chef Quique Dacosta. In his restaurant, the only 3-star establishment in the region, the chef uses exceptional produce (always local) to create refined plates bursting with flavour. Here, cuisine becomes an art form. The plates are perfectly executed and offer beautiful palettes of colour. A highlight of Spanish gastronomy!

Set off on a wine route around Alicante

If you are a fan of fine vintages, the Costa Blanca will not leave you wanting. Indeed, the Alicante region is particularly renowned for its good wine. Like Alsace, Alicante has its own Wine Route, bringing together several vineyards, most of which are located near the coast. If this kind of trip appeals to you, we suggest getting in touch with the various estates in the region, all of which offer visits or tastings.

Conclusion
