The American giant Google says so: Spain is the most sought-after country for investing in a second home. Indeed, every year many Europeans invest in property in Spain, and for a variety of reasons such as the Mediterranean climate, beaches as far as the eye can see, the gastronomy or the country's wealth of tourist and cultural attractions.
Nowhere else!
Spain is the best country for investing in a second home. That is what a recent study (June 2020) carried out by the company iProperty Management reveals, based on Google searches for various keywords such as “properties for sale” and “homes to rent”. The first finding: Spain tops the ranking of the most searched-for countries on the American search engine, with 690,360 searches per year, of which 37,600 were made by British users. Further down the ranking, Canada comes second, just ahead of France, Australia and Portugal.

According to iProperty Management, foreign residents have made up 10.3% of the Spanish population since 2019. And it is fair to say that the British are wild about Spain. Indeed, according to data collected by the property big data platform Brains RE, 250,392 Britons currently live in Spain. They are the third most represented foreign community, after Moroccans and Romanians. As a result, British citizens represent a significant commercial niche for the Spanish residential market.
And where do the Belgians fit into all this? According to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, some 30,000 Belgians spend time in Spain. In 2017, Belgians ranked fifth among buyers of homes in Spain. Indeed, after the British, Belgians are the most numerous buyers on the Costa Blanca, with a preference for new-build properties.
