What to do in Lorca?

This week, we take you to discover the town of Lorca, located in south-eastern Spain in the Province of Murcia. Listed as a historic site in 1964, it is nicknamed “the baroque town” owing to the strong presence of this architectural style throughout the town. In this article, we reveal all the curiosities of this lovely town with its rich historical past.

Lorca Castle

Overlooking the town, this medieval castle dating from the 11th century is divided into three walled enclosures spread over 52,000 m². The building has been developed into a themed space dedicated to tourism and heritage interpretation under the name Fortaleza del Sol. This initiative earned the town of Lorca a finalist place in the European Commission's EDEN programme (European Destinations of Excellence) for its sustainable tourism offering. What's more, Lorca Castle is made available to the public for hosting events such as weddings, christenings, communions, photo shoots, and so on. Just the thing to turn these occasions into unforgettable, magical moments in an exceptional setting.

Semana Santa

Besides its castle, the town of Lorca is known for its celebration of the Semana Santa. Over 4 days (Friday of Sorrows, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday), you can admire magnificent Biblical-Passion parades pitting the Brotherhood of the Whites against that of the Blues. A procession unique in Spain, Holy Week celebrates the Passion of Christ through popular biblical episodes and figures. Able to welcome 10,000 spectators, the town is completely transformed for the duration of this religious event.

Museo Azul de la Semana Santa (MASS)

Can't attend the Holy Week celebration in Lorca? Experience it another way! In this museum, visitors first discover all the secrets of this extraordinary event. The audiovisual displays let them “feel” this unique experience, and that every day of the year! Recently restored and reopened, this museum offers an overall view of the Brotherhood of the Blues through its embroidery, its workshop, audiovisuals and images of the brotherhood's history (Paso de Azul).

Synagogue, Jewish quarter

In the archaeological park of the town's Jewish quarter stands the only synagogue in Spain that was not later converted into a church. Moreover, the park was designed as a space to explore the former Jewish quarter: a stroll through the remains of the streets, and a discovery of the Jewish houses and Orthodox traditions.

Plaza de España

Dating from the 18th century, the Plaza de España was once synonymous with power, as it was home to various notable buildings such as the town Council and College, as well as the residences of the town's illustrious families. Today, the square brings together all manner of the town's social and cultural events.

Beaches

After all these cultural visits, there's nothing like a moment of relaxation away from the bustle of the town. Lorca is also brimming with unspoilt beaches, each more beautiful than the last, where you can enjoy the sun in complete peace and quiet.
